Print was originally used for communication. Its exceptional technical characteristics make it a valuable artistic medium.
An artist creates an image on a flat surface to make a print. To create an original print, the artist inks the surface and presses it onto the paper.
Printmaking is the process of printing works of art, usually on paper, but also on fabric, wood, metal and other surfaces.
... Except for monotyping, all printing processes can produce identical multiples of the same work of art.
The works thus produced are called prints or "impressions".
