Wellcome to my gallery

Academic painter, Master of Graphics (1951, Belgrade, Serbia).
The journey of Dragan Sovilj through his creative realm unfolds not as a straight, continuous line, but as a rhizomatic spread with a series of unpredictable eruptions. The constant within this discontinuity is his profound visual literacy, shaped during the late seventies and early eighties at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade and the Düsseldorf Art Academy, under the mentorship of Professor Günter Uecker.

The visual dominant is flux—constant flow and movement, defying any assumption of determinism.

One could say that in both his graphic and painting work, an enlightened and articulated randomness forms the central "motive" of his artistry.

In his creative process, Sovilj aims to set aside ego, drawing impulses from his own primordial depths, giving them form and leading them into dialogue with the spirit of an accelerated, contemporary civilization.

Oil panting

  • thoughts of the art critic

The vertical line disrupts the horizontal monotony of everyday life, creating a perspective that is both thrilling and refreshing. Observing the piece is akin to listening to a musical composition; it gently guides us into its structure, unveiling new insights and rocking us in its intoxicating rhythm. The pause, which at first appears to be just that, resonates with a tone that vibrates deeply; similarly, what we perceive as white is, in fact, a hue of turquoise—a reflection of the sky upon a tranquil sea. D.S. masterfully illustrates that even within action, stability can assert its dominance.

The black color here weaves its own narrative, even as vibrant hues dominate the foreground. D.S. disrupts the confines of the cage that surrounds us, summoning Pluto, the god of the underworld, in all his brutal intensity—echoing the moment he abducted the beautiful Persephone and carried her off to Hades. Yet, behind this darkness, a reversal begins to emerge; Persephone ultimately finds her way back to the grain goddess Ceres.

From the destruction of the old arises hope, light, and prosperity, reminiscent of the Phoenix rising from its ashes. This work powerfully illustrates that from despair can spring renewal and abundance, inviting us to reflect on the transformative cycles of existence.

Deep within his essence, D.S. emerges as a master of graphics, skillfully applying and adapting his technique to the drawing. He has crafted a "print" of his grid, executed with remarkable artistry. Through bold strokes, he highlights the dynamic flow of vertical lines, creating a striking impression that pulls the viewer into a tale, inviting them to uncover the secrets that lie beyond.
